Antenatal checks at outreach days, clean delivery kits, and a midwife visit in the first week after birth.

Many women in rural Rakai have their first antenatal check late in pregnancy, or not at all. The nearest health centre can be ten kilometres away on a murram road, and a day at the clinic is a day without income.
So we take the first check to them. At every outreach day a midwife measures blood pressure, checks the baby's growth, tests for anaemia where we have strips, and talks through the danger signs that mean "go to the health centre now". Every woman leaves knowing which facility to deliver at and how she will get there.
Women in their last trimester receive a clean delivery kit, so that even a birth that happens on the way is a safer one. Within a week of the birth, a midwife or a trained village health volunteer visits to check on mother and baby.
What we do
Blood pressure, fundal height, baby's heartbeat, and danger sign counselling at every outreach day.
Gloves, cord clamps, a sterile blade, a plastic sheet, cotton wool and soap, packed by our midwives.
Each mother leaves with a named facility, a transport plan and a phone number to call.
A home visit within seven days of birth to check feeding, bleeding, the cord and the mother's mood.
