Team and governance

Health workers, elected by health workers

MANCO is led by a Board of Directors chosen by members at the General Assembly. Day to day work is run by the Executive Director and a small technical team.

Our founder

Nabuufu Imelda

Founder and Executive Director of MANCO, 2022

Brought the first nurses and midwives of Rakai together around one question: what would it take for care to reach the people furthest from a health centre? She now leads MANCO's day to day work, the outreach calendar and the volunteer team.

MANCO started as a conversation between a few nurses and midwives in Rakai District who kept seeing the same things: mothers delivering on the way to the health centre, and health workers carrying night shift after night shift alone. Our founder brought that group together, wrote down what they wanted to change, and in 2022 the Constitution was signed.

The team

The people behind the work

Appointed by the Board and reporting to it through the Executive Director, the team runs projects, systems and outreach day to day. Most of the people at an outreach day are volunteer members.

Deputises for the Chairperson in all activities, and steps in temporarily if the Chairperson is absent, until a new Chairperson is elected.

  • Executive Director

Oversees all technical operations and the day to day running of MANCO, supervises staff, prepares reports to the Board, and carries out the Board's decisions.

  • Finance Director

Acts as treasurer: keeps and accounts for all funds, oversees the budget and planning process, supports fundraising and keeps custody of MANCO's property.

  • Board Secretary

Organises Board meetings, records the minutes, and keeps custody of MANCO's legal documents.

How decisions are made

The rules, in plain words

Taken from our Constitution and Bylaws.

Read about our accounts
1 a year

The General Assembly of all members meets at least once a year. It is our supreme decision making body.

4 a year

The Board meets at least once every three months, and more often when needed.

Half

At least half of the members, or a number set by the General Meeting, make a quorum.

Majority

Decisions are by show of hands and simple majority. If votes tie, the Chairperson has a casting vote.

2 of 3

Every bank withdrawal needs two of three signatories, including the principal signatory.

Every year

Accounts are audited by auditors appointed by the Board, and laid before the Annual General Meeting.

Accountability

When something goes wrong

Leaders answer to members. Any member can raise a complaint, and every accused person is heard before a decision is made.

  1. A written complaint goes to the Chairperson (or the Vice Chairperson, if it concerns the Chairperson), signed by at least a third of fully registered members.

  2. The person concerned receives a copy and has 14 days to send their defence.

  3. The General Assembly meets and hears them in person.

  4. Any action needs the support of at least three quarters of registered, fully subscribed members.

  5. Disputes are settled internally first. If that fails, a respected third party such as clan leaders, religious leaders or the Community Development Office is asked to arbitrate.
